For my 21st birthday present, my mom surprised me with a Westglow-Resort and Spa trip in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. She went five or so years straight while I was growing up, so this year she finally decided I was old enough… or maybe she just really wanted to go back, either way is fine with me.
Every mother and daughter should have a weekend in the high country. Boone is like a separation from the outside world. A calming and relaxing mini-vacation that can easily be made energetic by walking around after 8pm. It really has everything you need no matter what you’re looking for.
Since I just turned 21, we decided to try out the Rivers Street Ale House on the first night. There is nothing like sharing a good glass of wine or a good beer with your mom. She is basically living through you at this point and she just loves to reminisce on her college days. (And yes, she may do this all weekend)
The next day was the spa trip and WOW talk about a life changer. A spa is just one of those special things that should always be shared between a mother and daughter. I tried to convince my mom that it was an experience we needed to have a few more times but she didn’t buy it. It was such a relaxing experience and it was made 100 times better by having my mom, who is also my best friend, by my side.
If the weather is nice you two can share a hiking trip together, and if it’s a little colder you can drive 10 minutes and go ice-skating at Appalachian Ski Mountain. If your mom is really adventurous you can take her skiing or snowboarding, but my mom claims she is “too old” for that. The next day you can walk around downtown blowing rock for hours, taking in the beauty of the streets and the park in the center of town. My friend and I watched a band play in the park one time. Just grabbed a blanket, laid it on the grass and sat there all day people watching and taking in the beauty. It’s easy to do. Top the night off with a stop at the Blowing Rock Brewing Company, Macadoos (A Boone favorite), or Tapp Room if your mom wants to again, reminisce on her college days. There is just something different about being in such a beautiful setting with someone as awesome as your mom. It can be a very inexpensive trip if you plan it right, but as mentioned before, it feels like you’re completely separated from the rest of the world.
Go ahead and start planning your mother-daughter weekend in the High Country, you won’t regret it!
